For most of my patients, I prefer VASER liposuction over traditional liposuction. VASER liquefies fat before it’s removed, which typically allows more complete, even fat removal, smoother contours, and less bleeding and discomfort. It isn’t the right choice for everyone, though.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs hundreds of liposuction procedures each year, I choose the right technique based on each patient’s anatomy and goals. Here’s how I explain the difference to patients in my Atlanta practice.
What Is Traditional Liposuction?
Traditional liposuction removes fat by physically loosening it with a cannula and suctioning it away. First, I inject a tumescent solution that numbs the area, minimizes bleeding, and firms the fat. Then I move a thin cannula back and forth to dislodge fat cells before removing them.
This method has a long track record. However, the results depend heavily on your surgeon’s skill and attention to detail. As one of Atlanta’s most active lipedema surgeons, with a focus on body contouring procedures, I often use liposuction on its own and as part of procedures like body lift, thigh lift, drainless tummy tuck, and mommy makeover. I regularly treat complex cases, including patients referred by other surgeons, and I understand the importance of selecting the right technique to achieve your desired results.
How Is the VASER Liposuction Procedure Different?
VASER liposuction uses an ultrasound probe to liquefy targeted fat before it’s suctioned. Because the fat is already liquefied, I can remove it in a more complete, even layer, which helps create smoother results and better-defined contours. In my experience, VASER offers:
- Smoother, more even results from uniform fat removal
- More precision for sculpting and definition
- More effective fat removal in dense, difficult-to-treat areas
- Less bleeding and pain than traditional liposuction
- Mild skin tightening in areas with slight laxity
- An easier approach to revision for patients who’ve had liposuction before
Your consultation at Hagopian Plastic Surgery includes a thorough examination and exploration of your goals, during which we’ll discuss whether VASER liposuction, SAFELipo®, or another approach best suits your needs.

When Is VASER the Better Choice?
VASER is usually the better choice for patients with dense or stubborn fat, high-definition contouring goals, mild skin laxity, or previous liposuction they’d like to improve. It’s often my first choice when a patient has:
- Dense or fibrous fat that’s harder to remove with traditional techniques
- Goals for refined, high-definition contours
- Mild skin laxity that could benefit from gentle tightening
- Unsatisfying results from previous liposuction, since scar tissue from a prior procedure makes fat harder to remove with traditional techniques
For soft fat and good skin elasticity, a well-executed traditional or SAFELipo approach may also achieve great results. SAFELipo adds a fat equalization step designed to smooth the remaining fat layer.
Whichever technique we choose, the most significant risk is contouring irregularities, the lumps and bumps some people associate with liposuction. No technique eliminates this risk entirely, and I’m upfront with every patient about that.
Which Liposuction Technique Has the Faster Recovery?
VASER generally allows a quicker recovery than traditional liposuction. Most of my VASER patients return to work and routine daily activities within 4 to 7 days. Whichever technique we use, recovery follows the same core guidelines:
- Wear your compression garments continuously for 6 weeks, except when showering.
- Resume light cardiovascular exercise, such as leisurely walks, at about 3 weeks.
- Avoid heavy exercise for 6 weeks.
- Have postoperative lymphatic massage as directed to help reduce swelling.
These protocols are designed to help you recover smoothly and achieve optimal results.
Can Liposuction Fix Loose Skin?
No liposuction technique can remove excess skin. Skin typically tightens about 10% to 15% after liposuction, and VASER can help mildly lax skin. For patients with mild to moderate laxity, I often combine VASER with a technique such as BodyTite® or Renuvion® to achieve additional skin tightening. Significant looseness, however, still requires skin removal.
This is one of the most important conversations we have during your consultation. Most patients who come in asking about liposuction also benefit from skin tightening or skin removal. If your concern is a lower belly with loose skin or separated muscles, it helps to understand how a tummy tuck compares to liposuction. The same principle applies to the arms, where sagging upper arms often respond better to an arm lift than to liposuction alone.
How Do I Know Which Technique Is Right for Me?
The right technique becomes clear during an in-person evaluation at Hagopian Plastic Surgery. I spend at least an hour with each patient in consultation, and I don’t try to sell a procedure; I give you an honest assessment. We consider factors like your:
- Fat type: Dense, fibrous areas often benefit from VASER.
- Skin quality: Laxity may call for skin tightening or removal.
- Treatment areas and volume: Larger volumes require careful, staged planning.
- Medical history: Conditions like lipedema change the approach.
- Goals and downtime: Your desired degree of contouring and available recovery time influence the treatment plan.
Together, these factors help me determine which approach can most effectively and safely achieve the contour you’re looking for.
