Is Labiaplasty Right for You?

Labiaplasty has become more popular in recent years as we work to de-stigmatize the discussion of women’s health and wellness and more women learn about the procedure. Women who experience changes to their labia after vaginal births or whose labia have always been larger or irregularly shaped can benefit from labiaplasty.

If you’re in good overall health and have one or more of the following concerns, you’re a good candidate for labiaplasty:

  • Excess tissue that causes the labia minora to hang down lower than the outer labia
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse and exercise
  • Self-consciousness about wearing tight clothing, such as yoga pants and swimsuits
  • Dark or discolored labial edges

It’s also important that you have reasonable expectations about what labiaplasty can accomplish.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

There are 2 primary surgical techniques used for labiaplasty. The most common technique—and the one preferred by Dr. Hagopian—is called the trim technique. The other is called the wedge technique.

During labiaplasty using the trim technique, Dr. Hagopian begins by making a linear incision along the labia minora’s outer margin. By removing excess labial tissue, the smaller labia appear more proportional to the labia majora and the natural folds of the labia majora encompass the labia minora. One benefit of the trim technique is that it trims the part of the labia that is naturally darker—which is an aesthetically pleasing outcome that many women want.

Wedge labiaplasty is a more complicated technique used to reduce labial size. Instead of a linear incision, a surgeon makes a V-shaped incision and removes a wedge of tissue from the central labia. Then, the surgeon sutures the 2 edges together. One drawback is that this technique doesn’t trim away the darker tissue on the labia’s border.

Can You Combine Labiaplasty With Other Procedures?

Labiaplasty is sometimes combined with other procedures such as liposuction, breast lift, or breast augmentation.

How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost?

The cost of labiaplasty in Atlanta depends on the specific technique used and if it is combined with other procedures, in addition to several other factors. We will give you a personalized pricing estimate as part of your consultation.

What Is Labiaplasty Recovery Like?

You can expect to feel groggy after the procedure, which is an outpatient surgery. That means you’ll return home the same day and will need someone to drive you. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are all expected during the first week after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or prescription medication effectively manage any pain you experience. Some spot bleeding may also occur.

You might also notice a sensation of “pins and needles” in the labia as initial numbness gradually resolves. Cold compresses applied for 20 minutes followed by 20 minutes off is another way to relieve discomfort. You should plan to take at least a few days off from work. You should avoid having sexual intercourse for 4 to 6 weeks.
