Breast Lift

If you’re like many women, feeling good about your breasts is a big part of feeling confident. But pregnancy and breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and gravity can diminish the fullness, shape, and position of your breasts. Dr. Thomas Hagopian can elevate and reshape sagging breasts with a breast lift at his Atlanta plastic surgery practice. Breast lift (mastopexy) is popular among Dr. Hagopian’s patients and has a very high satisfaction rate.

How Is a Breast Lift Performed?

Dr. Hagopian customizes your breast lift procedure after discussing your cosmetic goals and evaluating the degree of sagging (ptosis) of the skin and breast tissue. He recommends the best approach based on his expertise and training as a board-certified plastic surgeon, and he uses a variety of evidence-based techniques to ensure the results meet or exceed your expectations.

Depending on the severity of the sagging and the position of the nipples, Dr. Hagopian uses one of these incision patterns to perform the procedure:

Periareolar: Made along the upper edge of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple), this crescent-shaped incision enables Dr. Hagopian to remove a small amount of skin and reposition the nipple and areola slightly higher. He recommends this approach for patients with minimal breast sagging.

Circumareolar: Also called a “donut” lift because it removes a circle of skin around the areola, this incision enables him to create a modest lift. This approach is typically used for patients with mild to moderate sagging.

Vertical: Combining a circular incision around the areola with a vertical incision down the middle of the breast to the crease creates a “lollipop” or “keyhole” pattern. Patients with moderate sagging can benefit from this technique.

Anchor: Adding a horizontal incision along the base of the breast to the vertical pattern described above is called an anchor lift and is considered a traditional breast lift. It provides more support than the other incision patterns and is the best approach for patients who combine a breast lift with breast reduction surgery.

Can You Combine a Breast Lift With Breast Augmentation?

Many patients ask if they can improve the position of sagging breasts with breast augmentation alone. The answer in virtually all cases is no. That’s because implants add volume (not lift) to breasts and their weight only exacerbates sagging. Many women, however, can benefit from combining breast implants with a breast lift. The procedure is quite common among mommy makeover patients.

What Is Breast Lift Recovery Like?

Breast lift recovery time varies from patient to patient. You should be able to return home on the day of the procedure and will need to have someone drive you home. Your breasts will be bandaged and you’ll wear a surgical support bra. You can expect swelling and discomfort during the initial few days after the surgery, which you can manage with pain medication. It is important to closely follow the post-op instructions provided to promote more efficient healing and minimize discomfort.

Most breast lift patients can return to a job that doesn’t require strenuous physical activity within a week of surgery.

What Do Breast Lift Scars Look Like?

Scarring occurs whenever a surgeon makes incisions. The visibility of scars after a breast lift depends on the incision pattern used during the surgery. If Dr. Hagopian performs a vertical or anchor lift, the most noticeable scar extends from the nipple to the breast crease. After about a year, however, these scars typically fade and become difficult to see. We also offer multiple scar reduction therapies to minimize scarring, including steroid injections, microneedling, and silicone gel strips from the Silagen® scar refinement system.

How Long Do Breast Lift Results Last?

A breast lift removes excess skin and reshapes breast tissue, creating results that last for several years. The aging process continues, of course, and skin eventually loses its elasticity. If you combine a lift with relatively large breast implants, the weight of the implants can also contribute to ptosis.
