Chin Liposuction

Fullness in the lower face is a common concern for both men and women and often has nothing to do with being overweight. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Hagopian performs chin liposuction to sculpt slimmer facial contours and as a double chin treatment at our Atlanta, GA, plastic surgery practice. Unlike nonsurgical options, chin liposuction produces immediate and dramatic results for patients who want a more defined chin and jawline.

How Is Chin Liposuction Performed?

There are several liposuction techniques that surgeons use to perform chin liposuction, including traditional liposuction. Dr. Hagopian prefers an advanced technique called SAFELipo™, which is an excellent option for delicate areas such as the chin. The 3-step process is gentler and more precise than liposuction techniques that use ultrasound or radiofrequency energy. This results in minimal bruising, bleeding, and swelling.

SAFELipo’s 3-step process includes:

  • Inserting a thin, specialized tube called a cannula to break apart fat and separate it from the surrounding tissues without disrupting blood vessels
  • Suctioning the liquified fat from below the chin
  • Smoothing the thin remaining layer of fat—called fat equalization—to ensure the results appear even

SAFELipo is combined with power-assisted liposuction (PAL), which involves using a vibrating cannula to reduce the trauma caused when a surgeon breaks up the fat.

For patients with a small degree of skin laxity, Dr. Hagopian may also use FaceTite for skin tightening along with chin liposuction.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Chin Liposuction?

Chin liposuction is an effective contouring procedure if you’re concerned about excess fat below the chin but aren’t significantly overweight. The appearance of a double chin often isn’t related to weight gain. Many people inherit the trait from one of their parents, or a double chin may develop as you age. It’s important that the skin retains enough elasticity to “snap back” once the fat is removed. Patients with loose neck skin need to combine chin liposuction with a neck lift or facelift.

How Much Does Chin Liposuction Cost?

Starting at $2,700

The cost of chin liposuction in Atlanta starts at $2,700. The total cost depends on the extent of the procedure needed to produce the desired results and if it is combined with other procedures, such as a neck lift. Dr. Hagopian customizes each chin liposuction surgery, and we provide you with a personalized pricing estimate as part of your consultation.

What Is Chin Liposuction Recovery Like?

Because Dr. Hagopian uses SAFELipo for chin liposuction, the recovery is typically shorter and more comfortable than after procedures that use other liposuction techniques. That’s because there is less bruising and swelling using SAFELipo. Chin liposuction patients typically return to work after a few days if they have jobs that aren’t physically strenuous. You’ll need to wear a chin compression garment for as much time as possible during the first week of your recovery. We provide detailed postoperative instructions to all patients.

How Long Do Chin Liposuction Results Last?

You can expect to enjoy the results of chin liposuction for years to come. Maintain a good skincare routine to help your skin retain its elasticity and avoid weight fluctuations.

What Do Chin Liposuction Scars Look Like?

Incisions made during chin liposuction are extremely small—just enough to insert the thin cannula. The resulting scars are barely perceptible and will fade over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for chin liposuction?

Chin liposuction will remove a significant amount of fat under the chin and along the jawline. Liposuction of the face (above the jawline) is never recommended or performed at our practice, except for cases involving congenital malformations or poorly performed facial fat grafting. Chin liposuction can slim down the chin and lower jawline, providing a slimmer and sharper jawline contour. The body naturally contracts by around 10-15% of excess skin after liposuction, and the addition of devices such as FaceTite can enhance those results.

What are alternatives for chin liposuction?

Individuals with a significant amount of excess skin would benefit from the addition of FaceTite, as well as considering a neck lift. FaceTite provides an additional 10% skin contraction when incorporated into the liposuction procedure. During your initial consultation, Dr. Hagopian will assess and explain your options for achieving your goals. Older patients with a substantial amount of excess skin will require a face/neck lift and are not suitable candidates for chin liposuction.

Will I be under anesthesia for chin liposuction?

Chin liposuction is typically very well tolerated in-office. We utilize something called an MKO melt, which is a combination of anti-anxiety medications designed to relax our patients. The area is numbed using local anesthesia. Patients may alternatively choose not to use anti-anxiety medications and remain fully aware if they wish to drive themselves.

Should I massage the area following my procedure?

Begin lymphatic massage within 1 week after liposuction and continue it 1-2 times per week for up to 6 weeks. You can do this at home using a small jade roller or with a licensed lymphatic massage therapist.

How long do I need to wear compression following my recovery from chin liposuction?

You should wear the compression garment provided to you on the day of your procedure at all times for 2 weeks. It should only be removed for showering, cleaning the garment, or for short periods (such as a work meeting on Zoom, for example). Compression allows your body to recirculate lymphatic fluid, reducing swelling and improving your end results.

How can I get the best results from my chin liposuction?

Alastin Skin Nectar is a product specifically formulated to enhance results before and after procedures such as liposuction, micro needling, neuromodulator injections, and more. By applying Alastin to the area three weeks before and for six weeks after the procedure, patients can significantly reduce swelling and bruising while improving their end results. Apply this product twice a day, using one pump per application. The bottle can last beyond your chin liposuction timeline and can be used for subsequent procedures. A complete post-procedure kit from Alastin is available for the best results and the fastest recovery.

What are the major potential complications patients have following chin liposuction?

Scar banding is when the body forms excess fibrosis around the incision created by chin liposuction. Although everyone who undergoes chin liposuction will have a scar, some patients will develop an enlarged area of scarring. This is more likely in people with thin skin or extra skin. Questions about your candidacy for chin liposuction are best addressed in your consultation with Dr. Hagopian.
