Women get breast reduction surgery for several reasons. Large breasts often cause pain in the back, shoulders, neck, and arms. That discomfort is commonly accompanied by posture problems, along with deep grooves in the shoulders from bra straps and irritated skin beneath the breasts.
Besides physical discomfort, women often feel uncomfortable with unwanted attention that makes them feel self-conscious. Many also have to skip athletic activities like jogging because of the size of their breasts. Dr. Hagopian’s Atlanta breast reduction patients sometimes complain about not being able to wear pretty bras or fitted tops.
Breast reduction surgery can:
Increase physical comfort
Enhance the shape and position of the breasts
Balance the size of uneven breasts
Improve proportions
Expand clothing options
If you’re seeking breast reduction surgery to reduce physical symptoms, your health insurance may cover some or all of the costs.
How Is Breast Reduction Performed?
Each patient’s concerns and goals are unique. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Hagopian customizes breast reduction surgery to address your specific needs. The approach he uses depends on the physical examination, your lifestyle, and your personal goals. When Dr. Hagopian creates a surgical plan, there are 2 main incision patterns he may use:
Vertical breast reduction: An incision he makes around the areola connects with a second incision, which extends vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease beneath the breast. This technique is best for a moderate reduction in size and sagging. This is sometimes called a “lollipop” or “keyhole” breast reduction.
Anchor: Most breast reduction patients require more support than a vertical breast reduction provides. An anchor incision pattern, also called an inverted T, is made around the areola, which connects with a vertical extension from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease. He then adds a horizontal incision along the crease to provide more support and a greater degree of correction.
In either case, Dr. Hagopian removes excess breast tissue, skin, and fat to reshape and reduce the size of each breast. He can also combine breast reduction with nipple and areola reduction surgery.

What Is Breast Reduction Recovery Like?
The recovery following breast reduction requires most patients to take about 5 to 7 days off work. You’ll return home on the day of the procedure, so you will need someone to drive you to and from the surgery. It’s important to closely follow the postoperative instructions Dr. Hagopian provides, which will help minimize discomfort and speed your healing. Expect bruising and swelling to peak during the first week after the procedure and then gradually resolve over several weeks.
What Do Breast Reduction Scars Look Like?
Your scarring will depend on the incision pattern Dr. Hagopian uses. As with breast lift surgery, breast reduction scars typically fade after a year and can be nearly imperceptible. We also offer multiple scar reduction therapies to minimize scarring, including steroid injections, microneedling, and silicone gel strips from the Silagen® scar refinement system.
How Long Do Breast Reduction Results Last?
Reduction results should last a lifetime, although your breasts will continue to change with age. The breast tissue and skin removed during the procedure are gone for good. Breast reduction patients are among the most satisfied of all plastic surgery patients because the results have such a positive impact on their quality of life.
