Why Compression Garments Matter for Tummy Tuck Recovery

Compression garments support your abdomen as it heals after a tummy tuck, providing gentle, consistent support that can make the surgical area feel more secure during recovery. While compression is a standard part of many postoperative protocols, the key is to wear the right garment with the right amount of pressure.

At Hagopian Plastic Surgery, compression is one part of the recovery plan I customize for each patient. Understanding what your garment does, how it should fit, and when your compression needs change can help you follow that plan with confidence.

What Does a Compression Garment Do After a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck reshapes the abdomen by removing loose skin and, when needed, repairing separated abdominal muscles. Your tissues need time to heal and adjust to their new contours afterward.

A compression garment provides gentle, consistent support during this process. Many patients also find that compression helps them feel more comfortable and secure when they’re standing, walking, and gradually returning to everyday activities.

Think of your garment as one part of your overall recovery plan. Wearing it as directed can support your healing tissues, but tighter or stronger compression isn’t necessarily better.

What Compression Garments Will You Wear After a Tummy Tuck?

At our practice, you’ll start with a medical compression garment, such as a girdle or abdominal binder, immediately after surgery. We provide this garment on the day of your procedure.

About 1 week after surgery, we recommend transitioning to a faja for more targeted compression. We also provide this secondary garment, so you don’t have to determine the type or level of compression you need on your own.

Your needs can change as swelling and tenderness subside, which is why following the compression protocol we provide is more important than choosing a garment based on how tight it feels.

How Tight Should Your Compression Garment Be?

Your compression garment should feel snug and supportive without causing excessive pressure or significant discomfort. You shouldn’t assume that making your garment tighter will help you heal faster or improve your tummy tuck results.

The goal is appropriate, consistent compression—not squeezing your abdomen as tightly as possible. That distinction is especially important during the early stages of recovery, when your body is swollen and changing from day to day.

If you’re concerned about how your garment fits or feels, contact our team rather than switching garments or increasing the compression yourself. We can determine whether what you’re experiencing is expected or if your garment needs to be adjusted.

How Long Should You Wear Compression After a Tummy Tuck?

There isn’t a universal schedule that applies to every tummy tuck patient. Your procedure, healing progress, and individual needs can all influence how long you should continue wearing your garment.

We’ll give you specific instructions and monitor your recovery during follow-up visits. If you’re ever unsure whether it’s time to change or stop wearing your garment, ask us first.

Tips for Living With a Compression Garment During Recovery

Wearing compression becomes part of your daily routine for a while after your tummy tuck, and a few simple habits can make the experience easier. Keep your garment smooth against your body rather than allowing it to bunch, fold, or roll, and choose loose clothing that fits comfortably over it. Follow our instructions for when you can remove your garment to shower and how often it should be worn.

You may also notice that your garment fits differently from one stage of recovery to another as swelling changes. If it becomes painful, causes persistent irritation, or suddenly feels much tighter than before, let us know.
